My favourite female celebrities inspired by mens style.

... because androgny is an endless source of fascination for everyone, especially when it comes to fashion. It's also pretty fucking sexy. Here are some rad females who do it, and do it well.

Demi Moore

A 1992 cover of Vanity Fair, what came to be known as the most popular example of modern body painting. The previous year, she was shot on the cover pregnant, and naked. Everyone was pissed. What a homegirl.

Cindy Lauper

What a moody bitch - I love this bowler hat. She's been a gay icon since the 80's, when she released an album called "She's so unusual". Now, she hangs out with Lady Gaga and saves the world via Viva Glam lipstick.

Patti Smith

I picture Patti Smith sitting on the beach in New York drinking out of a paper bag kicking sand in the faces of bikini claad bitches with her doc martins. She was a punk rock luminary in the 70's, and still is today. And she's every bit as beautiful at 63 as she was at 30.

Ellen Page

This 23 year old girl is talented as hell and really fucking cute. The best part is that she doesn't feel the need to show everyone her tits. I love how her style is sort of endearing and boyish.

Tegan and Sara

Every dude I know has a hard on for these girls. And rightly so.

Joan Jett

Like Patti, Joan Jett is one of those rock stars who sort of transcends gender. Her style is so effortlessly badass such that I imagine a lot of men probably would slay dragons to bang her. I also imagine her vagina probably has a sharp set of teeth.

Debbie Harry

I thought of Debbie Harry's style and instantly my mind wandered to the notorious stage shot of her wearing that too short t-shirt with a totally exposed vagina. Enough said.

Lady Gaga

I couldn't resist. Gay men love her, women want to have sex with her too probably, (I know I sure do.) Lady Gaga has created an entirely new way of self presentation. Here, she looks like one of the village people. This outfit is like something you would see on Church street at one of the clubs called Sailor. On that note, if you haven't seen her alter ego, Jo Calderone, feast your eyes on this, pussyhounds!

If you're happy and you know it say a swear.

In The Star today I read an article about an increasingly successful Facebook group for "intelligent, classy, well-educated" women who happen to enjoy swearing. Particularly, saying the word Fuck.

The article included quotes from many women who really believe in swearing. They were happy to find other women like them. The article expressed many of these women's thoughts pertaining to the discouraging misconceptions and assumptions that go along with a filthy vocabulary. One states, "people who hate swearing always say people who swear are uneducated – they don’t have a good vocabulary ... they can’t find the right word so they swear. I don’t see that at all. Swearing is language ...it’s a way to communicate effectively. People who don’t like swearing are focusing on the actual meaning of the word.”

I see the infinite wisdom and truth in this quote. I never really understood why people lumped swear words into the same category as bad grammar or something. My main conviction with writing right now is this: use fun words, have a fun vocabulary and still articulate yourself, still assert good ideas and it is possible to not sound like a total stupid head. It just seems more fun for everyone that way.

I also like books with pictures. What? what?!

I look forward to the day I see the word Fuck in scholarly journals and hear it on the news. I use it regularly and uninhibitedly, and I see no good reason to prescribe a limit on it.

My Aunt (whom I ADORE), asked me over dinner last weekend, "did you just say fuck?" and I was like "yes" (slightly awkward family moment ensues). Then I said "I'm a God damn writer and I'll say whatever I want with whatever degree of artistic fervor!" Then she said "well, if you say it too much, it won't feel so good when your really fucking mad"

This is a good point. One to be remembered. Swearing has been a recent development in my family. I admit that maybe it wasn't entirely appropriate to drop the fuck bomb during Good Friday dinner, however if I were to censor myself I think that would be the true crime here. I don't want to limit myself. All my good friends and lovers know that when I find a good word, term of endearment or sweet nothing, I wear it out to shit. My friend Jon, (whose friendship is sadly reduced to Facebook chat while we are both at school in differing cities), scolded me for calling him an insipid cunt rag too much. I admit that I have a dreadful knack for becoming obsessed with random idioms and using them within an inch of their lives.

When it comes down to it, though, I would give them all up before I would give up Fuck. I will maintain to the day I die that you can say Fuck and make a point. You can say Fuck, and articulate everything you ever need to and more because it is a glorious and magical word that brings with it sugar and spice and celestial seasonings. Every time I say Fuck I feel like I'm walking through a gentle rain of encyclopedia pages fluttering around me with a cool and refreshing breeze. Every time I say Fuck I fucking cook up summer in the winter.

It arouses contempt in me to think that people associate swearing with a limited vocabulary.

Any mother fucker who can't see that I'm a bloody walking thesaurus is an idiot.

Well I aspire to be, I mean. And I love the word Fuck.

Rachel McAWESOME

Ok so I thought her role in Sherlock Holmes was relatively anticlimactic, (I would have sprung for Maggie Gylenhall or Niaomi Watts, personally) but Rachel McAdams is still a top notch honey with shit on lock.

I say this because aside from being a stone fox and a good actor (in a world of questionable ones), she runs a website called greenissexy.org. (One of these days I will understand how to blog properly and you can click right on that shit and be taken there instantaneously.) At any rate, her website has a bunch of tips on how to greenify your life, complete with clever antecdotes and witty headings.

They have a "small change = big impact" mantra, which underlies their numerous daily tips to lessen your carbon footprint, one of my favourites being a template to write letters to your most hated corporations. (They say it themselves - if we like something, we’ll tell 3people, but if we hate it, we’ll tell 12. True that)

Its also just a really pretty website. Damn I love a woman who is not just a pretty face.

The Body Shop was founded in 1976 in Brighton, England by an Italian immigrant with a simple desire to save the whales. (I know, I know ... isn't that what everyone who opens up an enormous bath product company really wants?)

Thirty four years later, The Body shop is a multi-national business with some 2,500 stores in over 61 different countries. Anita Roddick, the woman behind the production, began selling skin care products in the interest of supporting her two daughters while her husband was absent, travelling. What started off as a small organization in between two funeral homes in England launched into a major corporation advocating for sustainability, women’s self esteem and human rights.

In the early days, Roddick started recycling simply because she didn’t have enough containers for her products. Eventually, the Body Shop would turn its resourceful values into a partnership with Greenpeace in 1986. After this, Roddick began to launch other promotions tied to various social causes, obviously attracting public attention to her products. For her, “campaigning and good business is also about putting forward solutions, not just opposing destructive practices or human rights abuses”.

Roddick has been referred to as “one of the country’s true pioneers”, campaigning not only for green issues, but also women’s self esteem. A 1997 advertising campaign utilized the familiar image of Barbie to make a statement that would earn them a lawsuit for copyright infringement from Mattel. A mascot for The Body Shop was created in the form of a doll in Barbie’s likeness, except for the fact that she was a size 16 and had red hair. The slogan for the ads in which she was depicted read “There are 3 billion women who don’t look like supermodels and only 8 who do”. Her name was Ruby, and she caused the Body Shop to be forced to rethink their ad campaigns. I always thought she was pretty cute.

Anyone who has visited the Body Shop’s website will be aware of their pride in a small ecological footprint. The company states an aim to reduce waste by 9 million bottles per year. All the packaging used is made with 30% recycled plastics, and a greater percentage is currently in the works. The ingredients used are a significant part of their sustainably approach to business. Their popular hemp line in particular demonstrates an effective use of this environmentally friendly crop. Hemp requires little fertilizer and no pesticides in its cultivation, due to few natural predators. The Body Shop makes note that hemp is one of the most environmentally friendly crops they have found yet.

Unlike palm oil, which entails incredibly destructive cultivation process. 90% of the palm oil we use is located in Malaysia and Indonesia, which is bad news for the wildlife that also resides there. The Body Shop was one of the first retailers to join the RSPO (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil), which promotes the growth and use of more sustainably cultivated palm oil. On top of all this, the Body Shop has never tested their products on animals.

While the company boasts a range of efforts pertaining to sustainability, their website leaves a lot to be desired. The ingredients are said to be “inspired by nature” – (a term almost as vague as “all natural”), and their corporate offices claim to be “energy efficient”, as well as some of their new stores. (What about the old ones?) They state a goal, on their website, to be carbon neutral retailer by 2010 ... this is now. I wonder if this has been achieved?

At least the Body Shop is making a genuine effort, which is more than can be said for most other corporations of its size. The woman behind all this is pretty inspirational any way you cut it. She is actually said to have single handedly shaped ethical consumerism. Her strong sense of values pertaining to human and animal rights and sustainability is one to be admired. I can get behind any organization that makes sure its personal massagers are certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council. Talk about self gratification you can truly feel good about.

The Divine Miss M

Look at this face! It's like a distinguished Molly Ringwald!
But I maintain that Better Midler looks way better at 64 then Molly ever has at 41.

I really like Better Midler, and so does my mom. But for different reasons.
Born unto a seamstress in Honolulu, she was raised in one of the few Jewish families in a neighborhood of Asians. (Bette, not my mom.)

Top 5 best Bette Midler roles:

- The First Wives Club. "Now, I ask you, Duarto, who's supposed to wear that? Some anorexic teenager? Some fetus? It's a conspiracy! I've had enough. I'm leading a protest. I'm not buying another article of clothing until these designers come to their senses!" Her rivalry with Sarah Jessica Parker in this movie really makes me want to be a more vicious woman.

- The Women. Divorced women eating sticks of butter and deciding they are, in fact, the men they want to marry. She gives an amazing soliloquy on how selfishness is the secret to life. The best part of the entire movie is when her character busts in on a divorced womens yoga circle in the wilderness and is all outraged that the class starts so early. The instructor goes "We always canoe at dawn" and Bette's like "I always fake my orgasms. That doesnt make it right" IN A YOGA CIRCLE OF DIVORCED WOMEN IN THE WILDERNESS!!

- The Rose. A movie based on the life of Janis Joplin, starring Bette Midler. Need I say more!

- Hocus Pocus. I don't understand how both her and Sarah Jessica Parker can be made to look like tranny warlocks but still be fucking hot.

- The Stepford Wives. Her house is a fucking pig stye in this and its pretty funny. Other than her, this movie is kind of lame.

I think my generation really hasn't appreciated Bette Midler for all she has to offer. She's also a Vegas show girl and rad singer. They say she is going to play Carrie's mom in the Sex and the City sequel. (Miley Cyrus is also going to be in that shit. Which may actually have an effect on my viewing the movie.)

(Of course I will view it, but I will look on with disdain at the parts with non human Miley Cyrus.)
